Lit sparklers are very hot, as hot as 1800°F to 3000°F. This is more than hot enough to cause severe skin burns, catch clothing on fire, and start wildfires.
Consider treating the family to a public fireworks display instead. The fireworks show at the Fourth of July Celebration in Kingston City Park is free. For more information on fireworks safety, see: (link...)
Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

Some folks will not rest until we can't recognize America at all. Fireworks may be harmful...in some way, but they mean so much to so many.
Here is a post I made on my blog back in '06 that tries to express what they mean to me:

West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department is holding its "Fireworks Sale," this year in the parking lot of Wal-Mart on Highway 27 in Roane County. The sale will be open all day and all evening.
There are other commercial fireworks tents around, but this one is the only one that benefits our West Roane VFD. If you are buying fireworks this year, make sure to get them from the hardworking volunteers in your fire department!
Click to download PDF of this color poster (2.2Mb).
Or download this black and white PDF version here (425kb).
Setup will be Thursday, June 25, so on that day only the sale will start later in the day.
Volunteers are needed to help with setup, the sale, security at night, and with finishing up on July 5. This is a great way to socialize and get to meet your neighbors while giving service too! For more information, call 354-5140 or 354-1500.
Remember to always use caution around fireworks. West Roane County VFD provides fireworks safety tips and downloadable brochures on its WestRoane.com web site.
