West Roane VFD ((link...)) reminds us that it's that time again! When you change your clock for Daylight Savings Time, remember to change your 9V batteries too.

The 10-year lithium batteries do not need to be changed so often, but like all smoke alarm batteries, they should be checked monthly just in case. And, "if your smoke alarm was installed more than 10 years ago, it needs to be replaced" (Source: USFA).

Lit sparklers are very hot, as hot as 1800°F to 3000°F. This is more than hot enough to cause severe skin burns, catch clothing on fire, and start wildfires.

Consider treating the family to a public fireworks display instead. The fireworks show at the Fourth of July Celebration in Kingston City Park is free. For more information on fireworks safety, see: (link...)

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.

I know the Roane County Schools were opened today. I was just wondering, with the extreme cold, were the students allowed in the building when they arrived at school? I know last time the bus got them there early and they were't let in the building. Somebody let me know please.
There was snow on the ground and roads in Harriman, Midtown and Kingston, but apparently not in Rockwood. I don't know about Oliver Springs.

WC posted, "A handgun in your house statistically does not make you safer."

I'm not going to post the refutations and corrections to WC's stats--"been there, done that," for years; I left that aspect of the blogging business in the mid-90's, but that is another story.

However, I will say: please speak for yourself!

Once again, as for many years, our home is dark for the holidays. No colorful lights adorn our abode to express our bounteous holiday spirit. Why? Are we modern-day Scrooges, trying to say "Humbug" to our neighbors? Or is there another reason?

October is National Fire Safety Month! Join West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department (WRCVFD) in celebrating "Safety Day" on October 20, 2007, in the Highway 27 Wal-Mart parking lot.

Meet Firefighters and volunteers and refresh your understanding of safety tips!

The fine volunteers of WRCVFD will bring a fire truck and safety literature for free family education and fun.

And, as always, support your local Volunteer Fire Department! :)

Just in time for National Fire Safety Month, here's a free print in honor of our volunteers titled "Roane County Night Fire: Still More to Do (2007)," a tribute to firefighters and volunteers in all endeavors. Our volunteers are all "10"s!

The mixed-media print is entered in the Kingston Country Fair ((link...)). There is a lot going on this weekend, but try and get over to the fair at Fort Southwest Point if you can!
