I believe the Brigadoon development was on the agenda tonight at the County Planning Commission meeting. Didn't seem like much was accomplished or discussed, but I would say that more issues are on the short horizon conerning the property, so stay tuned and ask around. I believe the owner is wanting to build more "lease properties".I think there will be a proposal at the next meeting.

Statement of Purpose: To restore habeas corpus for those detained by the United States.

But they should have.

A proposal for a consolidated high school located adjacent to Roane State is being floated around the County. It would combine RCHS, Rockwood, and Harriman high schools, but everybody has to wonder what it would be called and who would coach the football team...

I am pretty sure it will happen right after we get metro government in Roane County...something that is obviously a slam dunk for the taxpayers but is unlikely to happen. Too many of the old guard would have to give up what passes for power around here.

And anyway...everybody knows that combining three towns into one would never work.

In fundamentalist Muslim countries they cane people for disobedience, but only after some semblence of a trial.

Here in America, we don't use canes...We use Tasers...and there's no trial just Cops.

Most of these scams come from offshore and there seems to be nothing we can do about it.

Well I had to pick up an ailing great aunt in Florida today to be with an ailing grandfather...which meant 10.5 hours in a car. So I obliged with continuous non-stop Fox News on XM Radio to suit the almost Ninety Year old Sweetheart. What I realized... thank goodness the story of the day was OJ which we can all agree is a narcisitic moron, so I didn't need Fox to tell me that...but news has really become a gossip column. Not much real content...

Billy Bass will speak at Roane State Community College.

Now before you organizers reshedule your bass tournaments in order to go listen to a mounted plastic fish sing rock and roll, this is Doctor Bill Bass...the man who put meaning into the popular phrase, "I see Dead Peaple."

It's sponsored by the Kingston Public Library and the Roane State Library.

Sales tax in its present form is an absurd form of revenue for Roane County. It's no secret that Roane County taxpayers pay millions in taxes to other counties because of it.

The "Big sucking sound" we hear coming from the direction of Turkey Creek is your hard earned money going to support these people.

Both from H.L. Mencken.

Hope it generates some thoughts, maybe even comments.

"The average man does not get pleasure out of an idea because he thinks it is true; he thinks it is true because he gets pleasure out of it."

"The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule."

"Under democracy, one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right."

H.L. Mencken was a neat guy. Helps keep folks thinking. Consider this quote.

To me it should work to keep strong holders of political opinion on any part of the spectrum a bit more "honest." It is such a temptation to be so zealous in promoting those whose beliefs closely parallel our own that we get to the point of imputing bad things and dishonorable motives to those who do not see it the same way.

It is interesting to me that the most famous naturalist and environmentalist in American history saw the Emory River as the first mountain stream in his life. Here is another excerpt from John Muir's personal journal (the dates are somewhat erratic):

September 12 (1867). Awoke drenched with mountain mist, which made a grand show, as it moved away before the hot sun... Obtained fine views of a wide, open country, and distant flanking ridges and spurs. Crossed a wide cool stream [Emory River], a branch of the Clinch River. There is nothing more eloquent in Nature than a mountain stream, and this is the first I ever saw.

MS, Parker was in fine form and even signed my program just like a rock star. I'm a bit tired this evening but I'll post pix an comment tomorrow morning. you folks should have been there to hear the WhiteStone singers. They even sang the rewritten verse of the Battle Hymn of the Republic that repudiated war...Although I think only a few folks realized it.

Tune in tomorrow...that's it for tonight, kids.

It seems to be a site mainly aimed at finding fault with any- and everything the government of Roane County does, has done, or considers doing. Perhaps "progressive" means "antagonistic to the government that exists because it exists."

NOW - I'll also venture that my reaction may be premature, and I'll hasten to add that I'm anxious to stay here a while to see if that may not, in fact, be the case. If so, I'll welcome it. Perhaps the key is more people adding their participation to the site here.

I went on home because of the rain, but this is the first Kingston v Rockwood football game I've missed in a long time. I have good friends on both sides of the field, so this one is tough on me.

I wasn't able to find the game on the radio...What am I missing?

Why is there no celebration of John Muir in Kingston?

"I was a few miles south of Louisville when I planned my journey. I spread out my map under a tree and made up my mind to go through Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia to Florida, thence to Cuba, thence to some part of South America; but it will be only a hasty walk. I am thankful, however, for so much. My route will be through Kingston and Madisonville, Tennessee, and through Blairsville and Gainesville, Georgia. ..."

Sometime between September 13 and September 15 in 1867, John Muir passed through Kingston, Tennessee. He had left Louisville, KY on September 2, 1867 on what he termed "only a hasty walk" on his way to Cuba.

His fascinating journal can be read here.

For my Loudon County friends:

"Philadelphia is a very filthy village in a beautiful situation."

I love native flowering plants and this is my favorite supplier...

Mountain Mist Nursery

I've gotten great service and beautiful plants from them which fit in nicely around our hillside home. The supply of native azaleas is limited this year because of the late freeze. I've ordered mine.

These aren't your average big box store pre-diseased kind of azalea and they sure are beautiful...And natural!

Here's the money quote from the family of the victim:

“(Roane County District Attorney) Russell Johnson and (Assistant District Attorney) Frank Harvey would have gone all the way for us if we had so wanted to. We as the family just want some closure at this point before our own short lives are over.”

There are the usual "Fry 'em!" comments from some less than thoughtful people, but there has been enough tragedy for Cotton Morgan's family. Having to wait a decade or more for closure would be more torture for a dubious satisfaction.

I applaud Russ Johnson and his office, and most of all, the family of Cotton Morgan. May our thoughts be with them.
