Princess Productions, along with Roane State, and other Princess supporters, are working on many entertaining stage events for the May 16th show at the Roane State Theater. Here are a few of the tentative acts that will be performing during this production to benefit of the Restoration of the Princess Theater. Many other acts and entertaining video documentaries will be added as the time grows nearer to “show time!”
Muse Watson, star of many Hollywood movies and television shows, will be sharing his vision of “The Dream” for the Princess Theater, live and on stage.
The “Pick “N” Grin Bluegrass Band” will perform, featuring Larry Mathis and Bud Brewster, who used to play along with Dolly Parton in the early days.
“JD” Williams, local World War 2 hero, will be interviewed by Bill Landry.
There will be music by “The Chickadees”, live and on stage singing many of the “great war” standards accompanied by the music of the Babahatchie Band.
There will be dancing provided by Jennifer Austin’s “Arts in Motion” dancers.
Brooks Benjamin, local school teacher and independent filmmaker, who was married last year in Princess by Mayor Mason, will present an entertaining “short” of one of his movies that was shot in the Roane County area.
There will be an interview of Dr. Terry Stephens by Bill Landry, as part of the Gene Pickel story.
There will be a video presentation of the Phillippi Primitive Baptist Choir, an interview conducted by Bill Landry, with live music on stage.
There will also be live music by Charlie Acuff and the Lantana Drifters.
This agenda will be tweaked as “show time” draws near! Stay tuned...and keep an eye on the Princess Theater blog!

Tickets are selling fast.
Tickets are selling fast. They can be picked up at Rocky Top General Store or Harriman Jewelry (on Roane St.) Get them before the show sells out! Only $15. It will be worth every penny of it!
wow only $15.00 looks
like this is geared for a higher income bracket. What about the lil old lady who may want to go but cant afford it? Its cheaper to go to a Knoxville Ice Bears Game than to this show. Makes no sense to me why a ticket is out of most citizens of Harrimans price range. It had better be one hell 0f a show
Thanks for that positive attitude, dbi
Why don't you step up an offer to pay for a few tickets for these little old ladies? I bet we can get folks to match your contributions, one for one.
I'm good for a couple!
why just a couple? why not more?
If there is any poor older people on here that want to go PM me and we will talk..I personally would rather go to the hockey game..
The people who will go to the show...
... would probably prefer that a stellar attitude such as yours go to the hockey game as well.
RB
I think you are right RB but
what age bracket do you think will spend more money? I am in my 30's and I talked with some of my peers and also with some people who was at Ruby Tues last night and I didnt find anyone there that said they were going to this? I have nothing against what you and your peers enjoy but will there also be Rock and roll shows there and how bout my taste in music Rap? I also told them how much money was going to be put into the project and they all bout crapped their pants and said no f"ing way..One wondered why the city dont try to build a pool for the kids to enjoy if they have 2million to blow on a old building?
The CITY is not spending any
The CITY is not spending any money to renovate the Princess. That's what these fundraisers are about. So you need to go back to all these people and let them know you were lying.
The Princess project is being paid for by private funds and whatever grants we can get.
If you have a beef with the city for not building a pool, show up at council or call you council people and let them know.
I bet you spent more at Ruby's last night than one ticket would have cost and didn't benefit anyone but yourself.
There will be a variety of entertainment available to pursue. I'm sure if enough interest is shown, rap, hip-hop, rock or whatever will have an opportunity.
But wait, you'd rather watch grown men fight (hockey) than seeing our city have something that could benefit all taste and pursuits.
I would rather see a hockey game yes
and you must have never been to one since you think all they do is fight. Well now if thats true and the old Princess's fate depends on the people of Harriman then she shall not make it. I for one will not donate one dime to it if all its going to be used to is arts, I would rather is it make a go at being a movie theatre. But that would not work either. What good would it do the city does not have the money for a pool nor could they maintain it. Its hard to find most of the city officals. One has a Harriman address but lives on Old Suddath, One only lives in Harriman because they own that part of midtown. The mayor works to many hours for the COUNTY and cant be reached. Also why should I go tell them I lied they still think the idea of a performace art bull to be here is stupid. I spent around $50 at Rubys I have money and I earn it so I spend it as I see fit. And the tax money collected at Ruby's does go to the whole city not just one project, so it did more for the city than some concert that one only help one cause. I have a budget I live by and dont invest in building that are falling down.
What you do with your money
What you do with your money IS your perogative. But spreading lies in a restaurant about something you obviously no nothing about and seem to not want to learn anything about, is not right.
If you personally don't like the arts, old movies, live entertainment, live production shows, etc that will showcase the talent in our area, then fine, keep your money to yourself. And, while you're at it, you should keep your uninformed, negative thoughts and outright lies to yourself also!
dun been ignorant (dbi)..... Education
is an investment in the future. Just because you don't see a benefit in arts education does not mean that none exist.
If a young person wants to seek education
in that field fine or a person of age but they can take classes at RSCC for it and not at the expense of the hard working people of Harriman. And not all will be donated money. The utility bill will be paid by tax payers. I love education I payed my way thur roane state then UT so yes I understand it. Is it everything no I don't use my degree in what I do but I will always have it if something happens to my biz I own. But how many people in Harrima will be there and how many will ever make it big? I know of very few from the Oak Ridge or Cumberland County Playhouses thats made it big. DO the ones that go there and play in the arts enjoy it hell yes they do but I enjoy hockey and many other sports, some of you enjoy golf and you name me one kid who would say take me to the playhouse over the POOL and I will give u a cookie. Now Mountaineer name calling is so 5th grade lol.. you can call me nething u like. But I know my ideas are more supported than most of you. I do have a big question to ask and I would like it answered. I know that Harriman got a grant to do some work on the Princess has anything been done with that money??
It's not about making it big...
... and if you think that's all it is about for those at Oak Ridge Playhouse or Cumberland County Playhouse, then you're worse off than I thought.
They do it for the love of the art and the arts. The rest is gravy.
RB
More deju MOO (sorry RB, I
More deju MOO (sorry RB, I beat you to using it!)over and over again.
Why do you state that the taxpayers will be paying the utility bill for the theater? I'm sure a budget for expenses will be utmost of importance once the theater is renovated and up and running and expenses will be paid by revenue generated, whether through ticket sales or corporate sponsorship.
If you think the majority would agree with you, why hasn't the majority of the post been in defense of your opinion on here?
Why have they not posted?
most don't know bout this site or they dont even know its going on. Now its not legal for private citizens to pay bills for city owned property RB you should know that. I cant buy a new police car for HPD that would get the city in trouble. The Princess will never be renovated sorry its not going to happen. I have asked over and over where has the grant money been used? I have saw no work being done I wanna see wats been done in there??
How deliberately blind can one person get?
I see new records being set daily. The city doesn't operate the Princess. The city doesn't pay the bills. When are you going to get that through your head? Funding the project for the Princess is NOT the same as giving money to the city, it is NOT the same as buying a police car for the city.
The grant money that has come so far will be used to renovate the lobby and restrooms. You can't see that from the outside. And it's not open for tours, because it's not ready yet. You think you deserve a personal inspection because you don't understand the words that you're being told? Fine. Ask Gary Baker or Chris Mason to give you a personal tour. I haven't had one. But your attitude makes you important enough that you should have one.
RB
Maybe you should read the 99
Maybe you should read the 99 year lease agreement between the city and Gary Baker. It was approved by the city and MTAS.
Baker is to assume all bills, make repairs and pay any expenses incurred with the Princess for as long as the lease is (99 years). The city is not responsible for any debts associated with it.
I will be dead in 99 years and all of you as well
the building will be long gone. Who will take 0ver the building in 99 years?
Oh Boy! A riddle! If we are
Oh Boy! A riddle!
If we are dead in 99 years and the building is no longer standing...who will take over the building..
Let me see...uh... no one? LOL
I went and looked at the Princess
today and people you all need to go in the alley behind it take a look at the mortar in the brick.. its not hard to get out lol but its safe I promise..I wonder if it would be faster and safer just to build a new building? if its about spreading the education of the arts then the building don't matter right? The old building is not going to pass anything onto the students its the teachers.. Home Run
NOT ONE DIME FOR THE ARTS...
And THAT kind of attitude is precisely one of the significant reasons why there are things that outsiders can find to laugh at Roane County about. People whose minds are too closed and too narrow to give a hoot about anything that doesn't have physical contact and high likelihood of a fight or an injury perpetuate the stereotype of the "ignernt dum uncultured hillbillies." Just like the culture that brought down the Roman Empire. Don't think I'm trying to argue with you about your statement about hockey games being something besides fights. I know they are. I know some good people who absolutely love hockey. Your own personal attraction to hockey is not at all what I take exception to.
But unwillingness to support the arts is detrimental to a community and its society. It is itself a form of a social ill.
I gotta start a thread on this subject. There's too much to say and space down here on this thread is getting thin.
RB
Now you being mean to Hillbillies RB
come on man thats not nice. I could care less if someone wanted to buy the Princess and do all you want. But the city of Harriman owns that building because someone saw it as a money pit. I stand on it still not one dime and I may start a group to stop the support of it as long as its city owned. Why dont all of you that support it buy it
Not being mean at all...
You'll kindly notice that I put the term in quotes, and I only mentioned it in the context of perpetuating the (negative) stereotype.
RB
RB I understand.. But you could be on
to something there is a lot of people around here that have a tooth and not teeth lol.. but anyway where has that grant money went that Harriman got to work on the Princess and has anything been done with that money?
They still have it...
... and it will be spent on the purposes for which it was granted.
RB
when will it be spent? when can I come look inside
I and some others wanna see wats going on in there? I think if something is going to be done then do it. I own some rental property and bought another bout a month back and it needed work its now close to being done why I used my money on it to fix it and didnt drag my ass on it....
You bought rental property...
... good.
Have you never had some project you wanted to complete, that you got partially done, then got to the point you could go no further until you had raised X amount of dollars? How is that so hard for you to understand?
If you got involved and actually talked with the people involved, worked with them, rather than throwing stones at them, you would likely already understand where they stand with the project. Apparently you haven't been reading the information Mushy has been providing about the project on his blog or here or on the separate Princess Theatre blog. It has lots of details that are there for the reading.
Apparently it's easier to sit back, unknowing, throwing stones, than it is to do something as tiresom as simply READING.
RB
RB no I dont't buy it or start repairs
if I cant afford it thats just smart biz. I have been in the rental and house market since I was 19 so NO I have never started a project and got to a point and ran out of money. I do have some advise don't start the repairs on this building and half ass it and have to get to a point of having to raise the money to go farther. If everyone feels it will be a success and money will be made from shows there why not take out a loan?
Well, so far as I know, dbi...
Nobody has made any plans that preclude a specific form of artistic expression or entertainment.
Apparently you or somebody has been sadly misinformed: This is not money coming from taxpayer dollars that reside in the city treasury. To be more blunt: the city ain't paying fer it. So those comments don't have much meaning relative to the facts of the matter.
I think an issue that would be seriously considered before planning an event would be the potential for return on investment. So in deciding whether or not to put a rap concert in the Princess versus a bluegrass concert the decision process would be rightly weighted toward getting an idea of how many people would be likely to attend either one in the Princess.
One thing that always got big attendance locally was when there would be a rock concert during a street fair in Harriman. A stage would be set up and various groups would come and perform. Crowds were generally quite large for those events - and probably would be again.
Same probably holds true for bluegrass. If enough people would be likely to attend for a rap concert, I don't know of anybody that would try to forbid it. You know anybody that would come to such a concert?
Roane Conuty is not a monilithic entity when it comes to taste in music; there are numbers of folks who appreciate a wide variety of types of entertainment. We are a heterogeneous aggregation, not a homogenous group of clones. And that's probably good!
RB
hummmm make it a comedy club
side spilters in knoxville is doing pretty good. How bout making the old Princess an adult theatre and sell them adult items there and that way the people would not have to go to knoxville to get it or off line. Hummm now that would really make the money. But the closed minded people here dont allow such biz. Maybe someday we will open up our minds and go after the money. Did yall know that in the Harriman charter it states we can hold horse racing on emory st they would draw a crowd. RB when is the next city council meeting and will you be there?
Some of the old ordinances
Some of the old ordinances in the city, not the original charter, (there is a difference between a charter and just ordinances) did have some antiquated ordinances. I believe I am correct in saying that those antiquated ordinances were cleared up several years ago under the city attorney's guidance.
Do we not get a comment on the ADULT
idea I mentioned??? That could bring in some $$ I am all for that and the idea of strip clubs. I even like to gamble. But I guess no one in Harriman likes porn..??
RB
RB,
Part of any communication problems in this thread may be the readability of your excellent posts. The one to which I replied has a Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level of 8.8, possibly far above the comprehension level of some. :)
I wish WC could put a readability calculator on the edit screen.

Sheesh! What can I say?
Lemme try...
"Crap I'll try to do better."
Damn - had to use a 2-syllable word!
Maybe I'll have to copy and paste my posts into the calculator before I hit "post comment" and see if I can get 'em to the 85-100 range! ROFL! But 85 might still be too rough on some.
Thanks for the heads-up, OneT!
RB
Well, apropo of your comment...
... I found a calculator online. The post I think you are talking about, on this calculator, showed as follows:
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level 7.56
Fog Scale Level 9.62
Flesch Reading Ease 71.14
Characters/word 4.6
Words/sentence 17
Number sentences 17
I ran that analysis here (link...)

OneT - yo uhave opened a whole new world of OCD expression to me! LOL

RB
I used the calculator in MS Word 2007. :)

Why not hold it at the Princess?
that way the work could be show cased thats been done on the old Princess...
Because the Princess...
.. isn't ready for such use yet and doesn't have the space. It is not yet up to code for theater occupancy. That's one reason why funds have to be raised.
RB
From the Building inspectors office
its going to take loads of cash to bring that up to code for anything let alone theater occupancy, a interesting piece in Mondays RCN where Harriman faces some resistance for asking TVA for funding the theater.
One councilmember voiced
One councilmember voiced "concerns" but voted for the measure when it came down to it.
If there was any dissention from people, why aren't they showing up at council to speak up!
Yes, it will cost more than a million dollars to bring it up to a state of the art THEATER. One that our city can be proud of.
"If there was any dissention
"If there was any dissention from people, why aren't they showing up at council to speak up!"
Okay..I am showing my ignorance again and I don't care! You learn by asking questions!
When these things that we are discussing involves the city's or communities that I don't live in..what can I do? Is it any of my business even?
I grew up in the Princess theater and I want to help. I know that I can go to the fund raisers but just what are the rules here on getting involved in something other than your own community?
Thanks for ANY answers!
ANYONE can help. This will
ANYONE can help. This will benefit Roane County as well as downtown Harriman. It is our county and our communities.
We have had people from other states get on board with this project. It knows no boundary signs and can use help from anyone wanting to see it succeed.
Just recently a three time Academy Award (art directing, I think) winner who is a cousin to a former resident of Harriman offered his services.
The support is growing by leaps and bounds. Call Gary Baker or the Harriman city office. Someone there can put you in touch with someone.
Rumor?
I heard that Bill Landry who is no longer w/ Heartland Series is teaching students at Roane State how to make movies etc. Will these be shown at the Princess? Can't wait to hear the Chickadees. They were singing on WHBT radio more than 60 years ago.I knew one of them was stil around here but didn't know about the other two.
Some info
Bill Landry IS still with the Heartland Series. The WBIR management said that as of a certain date (I forget) they will SUSPEND production of new episodes. The old ones will STILL be aired and sold. When the times improve they will RESUMS production of new episodes.
Bill Landry is teaching, with Michael Golebiewski, a course on media production at RSCC. He has taught at RSCC before, and has appropriate degrees to teach at college level. The course they are doing is geared toward production of the show this thread is supposed to be about. They are going on the shoots for the interviews, involved with putting the show at RSCC together. It will be a multimedia show.
Folks need to check out the Princess Theatre blog that is talked about and has multiple links on this forum here. The Chickadees ARE still together and will perform at this show.
It will be a multimedia show - some will be on film/video, some live, etc.
The show at RSCC is to both promote the Princess project and to raise funds for it.
RB
Actually it is not a teriffically difficult issue...
... The architectural engineers have pronounced the building very sound and capable of being renovated very nicely. Being up to code is a process. You can have everything but one issue handled and you still can't let the public in there. There are several codes to be considered, but code compliance is not the main cost of the project.
The biggest costs will not involved code work but the thorough renovation needed to bring back the former art deco glory of the 1939 version of the place.
I haven't read the RCN - don't get the dead tree version. What did they say?
I hate like hell to have everything in the county to rotate around the TVA debacle. But if we're serious about saying that TVA does have work to do with regard to the financial reparations to the county over such things as attractiveness, marketability, and such for our entire county, then it is appropriate to seek some of the funds that will come from TVA to be directed toward this project. It is not nor has it ever been only aimed at Harriman proper, whether it is located inside Harriman or not. It has ALWAYS been the dream of those supporting it that the impact would be for the entire county.
RB
I look forward to seeing
I look forward to seeing such shows in the future at the Princess!
Folks, when the Princess renovation is completed, it will be a state of the art facility that will draw crowds from every where. Variety shows, movies, live productions... soemthing for everyone.
Come on, quit being so cynical about the plans for downtown Harriman and support this effort!
Downtown
hey downtown is a ghost town , falling down the money could be better spent tearing down the old buildings and making way for new structures and tenants, some of those 4or 5 story building are major fire hazard we have people going in them stealing copper, and other things, very very very dangerous, and talking of waste the city erceted NEW sign in front of these empty , condemmed building stating do no park in front during business hours.WHAT BUSINESS HOURS , they aint no business.
Looks like Nosey gets out and
looks around Harriman. I agree downtown is gone and why spend a million dollars on a building to bring it up to code when all the other buildings are not up to code and the best thing for them is to be razed. I mean come on people what good will it do to restore the Princess if there is nothing else around it? I just don't foresee it being much of a success, just being honest.. And AMEN on the no bizz downtown. Sure there is a new resturarant but how long will it last? I give them 4 months and hope I am wrong but I don't think I will be. I go there to eat and they have great food but its so hard to compete with the big chains.
Your information about the other buildings
isn't correct. Where do you get the knowledge that "all the other buildings are not up to code?" Who told you that and from what records? It simply isn't true.
Being an old building in Harriman isn't the same as being an uninhabitable building. A number of them have been renovated, inside and out,and are kept up well. Some are not. But you're doing nobody any favors by painting with such a broad brush. It simply is not accurate.
If you have to ask what good it will do, you haven't been reading much about the prject, have you? Talk with Gary Baker, Chris Mason, Bill Landry, Muse Watson, and others, learn a bit. Then you won't have to ask what good it will do. Look at what's happened in many downtowns, including Knoxville, including Decatur, AL, including Huntsville, AL, including Fayetteville, TN, and many, many more when they have renovated landmarks and revitalized their downtowns. And NONE of those places did it by razing every old building they could see. They realized how short-sighted and counterproductive such a move would be.
RB
RB are you a fool? Can you not look at a
building and see when its falling down? I will name the ones falling down and you tell me if you wanna move in there ok? The old Miller Brewer building. The old dime store. The old Edward shoe store. Now the ones the hospital owns are in a lil better shape but not sure they meet all the codes that it takes to build a new home are you? Now about the people you named Gary Baker, Muse Watson and Bill Landry(not a owner but has money) used to own the building they did nothing to open it back up and they both have the MONEY to do so. Now for Chris he at times has trouble even making it to the city council meetings and GOD forbid to have to call him even though he said I will be reachable when running for office. I say raze them old buildings and build a few new ones to look old if thats the look you old timers are going for. I for one say lets clean up shape up and bring in the new... Yes We Can, Lets make this city look so clean and lower taxes to promote some type of bizz or factory to come Yes We Can. City council and the Mayor need to get off their duffs and make them calls and knock on them doors and say to Factory owners Yes We Can... But not by saying hey guys we have a old multi million dollar project for a 1900 theatre can you donate to us please.. We promise this will bring Harriman downtown back to life. I have an idea lets bring back the White Store and them S & H greenstamps man that was the life. Maybe we should also take out the booze and make Harriman just like she was in 1890 wow. I heard a rumor the paper mill may be in need of repairs by god lets get it going again, and the old mills lets rebuild them. OK now is any of that going to happne hummmmmm hell NO..Now RB would it be great if it worked yes but will it NO. I know you will be saying this and that and back up your facts and the fact is Harriman is DEAD. Not buried yet but getting there. What will it take to get it moving I dont have the answers and The mayor don't I am not sure he even wants to be Mayor anymore for the rumors I have heard. I could be wrong but I dunno.. RB can't wait to hear back... and remember Yes We Can...well it worked of the president so thought I would give it a try
Most of those you named have
Most of those you named have given money, time and energy to getting the theater back. There has been a lot of work done inside but so much more is needed.
We have to start somewhere and the Princess will be the drawing board for the other buildings. Why fix up a small empty building/store when there is nothing to draw a crowd there. Start with the theater and bring the other buildings back after that.
To my understanding, the buildings in the UPPER 500 block have been cited, but it is a slow process to get anything done to them. And there are still several businesses on that block... a hairdresser, jewelry shop, and don't forget the Farnham building.
I remember an old saying that some of you could learn from.... "Can't never could do nothin'"
Fact Check
I was sitting in the codes enforcement office , the building directly across from the utility office, that the roof has caved in and its not condemmed or cited because of who the owner is, yet a building that has more than 200K dollars invested and remodeled has been cited or condemmed makes no sense to me.....
So what do you
So what do you suggest?
Thank You.
Treat them all the
same , or have them torn down,
Roane Furniture and, I
Roane Furniture and, I believe, the smaller building next to it has been sold to Mike Brown. I've heard that he plans on putting a bunch of antique cars he has restored in it for show during the Cruisin's this summer.
One more down
from that the roof has collapsed and is in terrible shape.
Last I heard Tyler owned
Last I heard Tyler owned that one.
Harrimanite
The guy who sold the property on Market Square in Knoxville to the people who opened the World Gratto (spelling?) and the Preservation Pub... he is the guy that then turned around and bought and now owns the property you're referencing, as well as the old Odds & Ends and Miller & Brewer property in Harriman.
Tyler and a partner sold the property you're referencing to that guy. They first wanted to restore the building, but HUB wouldn't connect sewer to it, go figure. Then I think they offered a really long free lease to the city to do what they wanted with the building, even tear it down for parking. But the city wasn't interested so they sold it for pretty much what they had paid.
Thanks for clearing that up.
Thanks for clearing that up. I was really behind on it!
"yet a building that has
"yet a building that has more than 200K dollars invested and remodeled has been cited or condemmed"
What building would that be?
The old
Seton Thrift Store Building the windows alone were over 50k, and now the wiring has all been stolen along with the HVAC systems, its a shame.
That building was bought by
That building was bought by Catholic Charities and remodeled with the hopes of supplying low or no rent options to homeless or needy people in our community. It was a noble idea, but unfortunately there are some people who you just can't help and who take no responsibility to take care of other people's property. Some of those who lived there trashed the place, set fires, broke up doors etc. The church gave up on trying to help and the roof started leaking down into Seton's probably caused by the fires upstairs.
Holy Smoke you mean the poor
people the church tried to help did all that to the building? No the wiring I am sure was tore out after it become vacant. Wow I bet them old cars being put in that building will bring in a factory or two. What bizz would not wanna locate in a town with a building full of old cars what a plan, I just hope the same dont happen to the princess and it becomes a bust and they all give up. like the church did. you are right some people just can't be helped i know some that meet on tuesdays haha...any who hope I can still get up Roane st once all the cars get moved in and the large groups of people standing shoulder to shoulder to look at them.
Harrimanite
I posted that earlier just so you would know who owns the property. It wouldn't be right for you to cast disrespect on the wrong person. I'm totally with you on the Princess. But I don't know the name of the owner of the building you referenced. I'm sure it's on the property records.
NO, dbi, I am not a fool. Are you a blind idiot?
You used the word "all." I said it was inaccurate. I STILL say it is inaccrate. NOw you're not using that word. Seems you've already seen the light. Not near all the buildings in the downtown are falling down. Some are - no doubt. You didn't mention specific buildings, you said all.
I don't know what you're doing to reach Chris Mason, but it must not be the right things. I never have problems reaching him. I don't know anybody that TRIES that does have trouble reaching him.
I know the people you mentioned personally. I know they do NOT have the money to write a check to make the Princess whole again. And why should they? If it's to be a community benefit, there should be community investment in it.
You are either ignorant or foolish or both to say that Gary Baker & Muse Watson did nothing to open it back up. I'm reallly tired of the negative nay-sayers who continue to run every effort down. It's people like that that hinders the progress Harriman - and other towns like it - need to make.
You've REALLY missed out on some lessons in economics and reality if you think the paper mill can be re-opened. Same if you think the idea of making Harriman a factory/mill town again could ever work. The economy of the entire country has changed in the years since that could ever work. A Mayor and Council that beat down doors asking factories and mills to come to Harriman would wear themselves our for nothing more than an exercise in stupidity. It's OTHER enterprises - enterprises like new businesses broughth about by new ideas rather than the same old re-cycled ones - that allow old towns to revitalize. I've already mentioned several cities and towns that have done it. And they've done it recognizing they can't have back the old mill/factory economy, that times have changed, and that skilled services, business, high tech, and other kinds of small business have taken the places of the factor/mill mindset.
Towns all over this country have learned to ignore the largely ignorant and disconnected from reality voices that keep saying towns are dead and can't be reborn. They ultimately will learn that in Harriman and the other towns in Roane county, too. It's only sad that they have to listen to such crap spewing in the mean time.
RB
Thanks RB, Gary and Muse
Thanks RB, Gary and Muse bought the Princess a few years back. They used their money to do so. They did some work on it and have used their money to do the work. When they saw how much more it needed to become the vision they wanted to see it become, they GAVE it to the city in hopes of getting grants to help out. The city applied for the grants that, they as private citizens could not. Baker has a 99 year lease on the property so that he could get the things done that needed to be done to proceed with the restoration. After all is said and done, the facility will be a state of the art production theater which will be a great asset to our town.
You're Damn right they gave it away
they are not stupid when it comes to bizz.. They realized they had stepped into a pile of poop so they passed it on to Harriman.
RB you are a FOOL for thinking
I was serious about the paper mill or the other mills I was making fun of you and anyone who thinks the Princess will bring back Harriman to its glory days. I know more about economics than you I have been in business in Harriman and Kingston for many years now and I also know when its time to give up on foggy idea. I try to change with the times I go where the money is at. I will go on record and state 90% of the buildings on Roane st are in major need of repairs and it would make more sense to start new rather than fixing them up at a high cost. No matter how much make up an ugly woman puts on she is still ugly under the mask and thats how I feel about the OLD buildings on Roane st. Now about Mayor Mason I have called him just today and nope no answer But sure he will answer for you that makes sense to me if you are who I think you are. Well I would bet Muse has the money if I am not mitaking actors make a lil better money than you and I. Now about it being a community effort I don't support it so I should not be expected to give any money for something I don't believe is good for Harriman. Fire away chief
How about starting a new
How about starting a new thread. Call it "Slamming Harriman" or whatever other idea you disagree with and leave this one as it was originally intended... Promoting and informing people about the status of the Princess Theater project.
Nah I will stay here and slam
I really would like Harriman come somewhat back but its not going happen without an idea that more that 20 people support... what happens in pro football when the QB is unable to perform anymore due to age or injury?
Nice, dbi... I may be a fool...
But I must be forgiven for not being able to hear your tone of voice, see your grin, or in some other way read between the lines of what appeared to be a serious post on your part. People can't read jokes into words like you wrote unless you give some indication it's a joke. If I should take your posts as jokes, then say the word, and that's what I'll do.
It's nice that you're revealing that your purpose is to make fun of peole and their ideas. That will make it MUCH easier for folks to want to engage in meaningful dialog with you.
I don't think you ever saw me type that the Princess would bring Harriman to its glory days. Bringing BACK the old Harriman "glory days" has never been the goal of the Princess project. Those days are gone never to return. What this project is and always has been about is to bring a new vitality and rejuvenation that will last in today's world, but simply using one of the basic items of the infrastructure (the Princess) as a vehicle. The project isn't about showing Gene Autry movies at the Princess, although that could be done and is planned as a PART of the project. It isn't about bringing back the mill/factory days that you joked about. Again - if you think that's what it is, you have not been paying attention.
And, since we're talking fools, you are one again for assuming I have never been in business in Harriman. I have - and right on Roane Street. So don't be assuming stuff that makes you smarter than everybody else and everybody else dumber than you are. THAT'S a pretty good definition of a fool.
Muse and his money.. hmm. you don't know about some of his family's extraordinary medical expenses, do you? I thought not. Acting doesn't necessarily mean one has no money issues.
I'm not the only one Chris Mason talks to. Did you leave him a message? Were you polite when you did so? Or were you calling him names? Have you given him reason to avoid you in the way you treat him? I haven't. Could it be your attitude is part of the situation?
Well, it's your choice if you choose no to support it. That's your right. I'm not at all sure why you think it would be BAD for Harriman. Seems to me that if it even COULD be good, and not necessarily bad, then it would be worth supporting.
But if you don't believe it's good for Harriman, then that's more than your right, it's your ignorance and prejudice hanging out. And, for the record, places in worse shape than Harriman have successfully revitalized their towns in spite of all the negative, narrow minded people who KNEW it couldn't be done. The REAL ignorance is in being so cock-sure it can't happen.
BTW- I'm with you - and have been for a long time - on metro government. If you can restrain yourself from calling me a fool, we might discuss that intelligently on another thread. Actually I've seen a lot that you post that I think is good.
RB
You Bet I do
i was born here and never have left, i have walked every foot of riverbank, every street, and its just hard to see a town go down like this one has, and not really much has been done, it would be great to see the theater open up and have 1000's come to see it, but just like the Rod Run or the car shows they hold downtown 100's if not 1000's came out when it first started now just a handful last time i was there even showed up, and by the way that new Country Steak Rest. is some good food there burgers are huge, if you order one take a friend cause i bet you cant eat it all by yourself.
Yep - it's good grub, Isn't it, Nosey?
Ate their the other night. Good simple stuff well prepared. That's the one across from the Ford dealer, right?
I'm with you on this one - anything that helps clean up and revitalize the town is a good thing.
RB
Yep across From Jerry
Duncan Ford.
The car count for the
The car count for the Cruisin' has increased just about every month. There are 100s there each of the shows. The only time the crowd was off was when it was raining or thunderstorms in the area.
You negativity on issues concerning Harriman is really troublesome.
Is it any wonder its so hard for someone to stay enthused about something when so many are standing on the sidelines, refusing to turn a hand, but ready to criticize those you do!
Riverfront Park is one of Harriman's greatest assets now but in the beginning, David Webb had to fight "tooth and nail" to keep the naysayers from keeping it from becoming a reality!
Last one i was at
clear skies, and very few in the crowd. I want only the best for downtown, just so many ways to get there and not all that has been proposed seems to be very fruitful, we have delapidated buildings condemed, and new signs were put up out front by the city saying dont park here durning business hours, man that is just crazy stuff, Riverfront Park had a plan and they had it under the bridge for all to see on a board, i have donated greatly to the park, materials, labor etc. they had a plan and kept to it and let the public know what was going on they still have that board down under the bridge showing what every dollar went for thats probalby the reason for the succens of the park and its very nice down there.
And to think, the park
And to think, the park started out from what was a wasteland. Now people come from all over the county to walk, run, enjoy the activities and equipment there.
Can't you have the vision to see that the same thing could happen to Roane Street? It's going to take time but it can succeed.
The signs were put on the street to satisfy business owners who had complained about their customer's complaints that there was no where to park because people were leaving their cars on Roane Street for days without moving them and the apartment renters were parking on Roane Street instead of behind the apartments.
Isn't it strange that people don't want to walk three car lengths to go into a store on Roane Street but will walk 10 car lengths or more to just get to the door of Wally World, then walk a 1/4 of a mile to get to the back of the store to save 10 cents on an item?
Yes i can
envision it, however with money being generated just for the theater and not any of the other buildings before long its going to be the only one standing, and where the signs were put up in front of condemed building and no business around for at least a block away and those building are a major fire hazard and need to be torn down that woudl be in the 500 block of roane st.
I remember a few years back
I remember a few years back when Harriman had the different things going on to promote the new Riverfront Park! The advertisements caught my interest but because of the " having to go thru town and risk being harassed" stigma , I never made the effort.
What if you tried again and we all support each other's community's fund raisers? I believe our LEO has changed enough that I could convince people my way to come! The river there IS open..right?
Well..this Matt thing has me worried to be honest.
Nope the River
is closed for that part of the Emory from Kingston.
Well shit!! How do we win
Well shit!! How do we win People? Gotta be a way! There are a lot of smart people here!
You don't win people
by saying bad words! You think we want to come in here and read words like that? There may be a "lot of smart people here" but by your selection of words, you proved you are not included! Keep it clean, please.
WELL!! EXCUSE ME..
I am sorry if I offended you and I will try to use my adjectives for you.
I do have to wonder why I am the first one you have said something to since I am certainly not the first one who has been caught up in the moment and let a dirty word slip.
You have no right to attack my intelligence and that is very rude. What do bad manners say about a person to you?
I have a very high IQ but chose to quit college and learn to Ironwork to raise my children after their father walked out. It is a bad habit that I picked up on the construction site and no way says that I am not intelligent. Do you realize how many scientists I have worked with that cussed like sailors? I would put their IQ against anyone's!
And What do you mean "Win People" I'm not running for any office.
Shame on you for being so mean and I would work on my bitterness and anger if I were you!
Let me Revise..
I understand now where you thought I meant "Win People". I'm sorry. That was meant as in "How do we win(this battle) Nosey,Harimanite,ect.."
Hey, Ben - I got a question...
... my hand is up...
I'm confused. You had to suffer going through town and being harassed to goo to Riverfront Park? If that's an issue, there's at least 2 ways to get to that park that don't involve going through the town proper.
I do like your idea about supporting each others community's fundraisers tho. We're all in the thing together.
RB
There is no way to get to
There is no way to get to Harriman without going thru A town when you live S.O.R.
Thanks RB. I wanted to be honest about what I thought might hurt the Princess from my community's view. I was afraid of offending someone and that was not my intention.
Oh - OK... without going through SOME town from SOR...
I see.
You wanna come to Harriman to Riverfront Park or Princess? Let me know... I'll have ya an escort! Nobody gonna mess with MY peeps wanting to come over to Harriman!
We do need to quit being so bloody centered on "my community - everybody else can go to hell..."
RB
