Inside Higher Ed has an informative article ((link...)) about concussions and school sports--"not just football."

"Football may have the highest number of concussions by sport because of the roster size, but many other sports see higher occurrence rates per athletic exposure. According to a National Academy of Sciences report released last month, field hockey, women's lacrosse and soccer, wrestling, ice hockey and women's basketball have all proved about as dangerous or more so than football in recent years in terms of reported concussions."

A single concussion can have devastating long-term effects on the brain. The responsible course is to eliminate these concussion-inducing sports from our schools, since even one concussion is too many.

No single study is the end all for any investigation, but...

I was involved in a study of athletic activities and their risk levels a few years back. The American Canoe Association and the US Coast Guard were looking at the causes of canoeing and kayak related deaths and comparing them to other sports. Surprisingly, football was not the activity most likely to have seriously injured participants, though it was very near the top and far ahead of the next place activity. Cheerleading and ice hockey were the top two followed by football in third place.

Not AT ALL surprised...

... about cheerleading, WC. Some of the stuff they do at the higher competitive levels is deadly! Lots of back and C-spine injuries, paralysis, etc.
