Rep. Dennis Ferguson,

We have waited over a month watching and waiting on the promises that were made in Nashville when we tesified in front of the House Environment & Conservation Committee.

As we testified, the panel looked shocked, and I can only ascertain that they did not fully understand the impact that the TVA disaster had left on the residents of our community. We did our best to voice what was going on in our community.

The panel appeared concerned and asked questions, and Rep. Ferguson even though you were not on that committee you did attend because this disaster happened in your district.

After we met with you in your office, you asked "what we wanted"... we told you we would like answers, help for residents that were in need, and help in getting regulation on the Fly Ash.

We gave you a list of residents that needed assistance in relocation.. you stated you would contact them. I went back to Roane County and advised residents that they would be hearing from you... but you gave that list to TVA instead...

and as of today I know of no-one that you have contacted from that list.

The residents just needed to hear assurances that you had heard us... that you understood our concerns, that you cared.

It's hard to hold on to empty promises.

Well nomore....

I tried hard today and I sent the response I received out to those who wanted to just talk to him. It is sad that our Representative won't even take 5 minutes just to call and talk to somebody. I am sorry that I could not do any more. I will keep trying. He now knows how you feel. I won't go into what happened today. Everyone who was on the list knows. I will try again tomorrow. I promise.

Ferguson did call me recently, poor fellow

But I wasn't on that list. I had called his office about some issue. I was very surprised when he called me out of the blue. I call politicians a lot and except for local-level officials they never call back in person!

Unfortunately, he called when I was sick and busy and overly truthful--I think I'd just gotten a string of spam phone calls--so in my exhaustion I gave him a difficult time. :( If I had it to do over again I would be much much nicer. So, please, Rep. Ferguson, will you let me say I'm sorry? :)

I can't speak for Dennis

I can't speak for Dennis Ferguson who is a friend of mine but if I were him, you would never get a call back. To use the excuse that you had gotten a string of spam phone calls to give a state representative a hard time is just hard for me to understand. After all, you called him first. What could you be thinking. You probably missed the best and maybe only chance to speak one to one with Dennis on the issues you are concerned about. It would have been most useful to us all, with the crisis our county is currently going through, to request his help. Regardless of what you may think of him you should afford him the respect that his office deserves.

Not an excuse, just what happened

If I could do it over again would I? Yes. But I did talk with him about some issues. I didn't use foul language. I wasn't curt or rude. I was respectful. But my biggest failing was that I let him know how I really felt, not usually a good idea when talking with a stranger. I talked more than I listened. Looking back I wish it had been the other way round.

And to Rep. Ferguson's credit, I was fall-off-my-chair surprised, deservedly so. I have been calling the offices of politicians to leave messages for 40 years, often a few times per week. That's 4,000 calls, maybe more. He is the first elected official at the state or higher level to call me back in person. Only a handful in all that time have even had a staffer call me back. (Staffers for Rep. Lincoln Davis have been very helpful and responsive.)

Rep. Ferguson represents how many people, over 90,000? I am extremely impressed that he called.

Please CC

your reply is just a "little" over the top. Try to remember that these people work for us, as in "public servants". You make it sound just a little to much like divine providence is responsible for Mr. Ferguson's position. If elected officials can't take the heat...
Oh, and by the way, have you never said anything you regreted later? Her apology should be enough.

Maybe I my reply was a

Maybe I my reply was a little over the top but my reasoning is the same. It makes no sense to offend government officials in times like this when we need there support the most.

Baloney!

This guy refuses to talk to the people who elected him. If in your view his position entitles him to do so, you might want to read a high school civics book. His support for his constiuency is NOT an option...it's an obligation!

Dennis does not refuse talk

Dennis does not refuse talk to the people who elected him. He can't talk to everyone at once. I have known him for years and he takes a while for him to get back to me also. He is not sitting there waiting for me to call. He has a job other than being a representative. Unlike other elected positions, a state representatives is not a full time job.

If you think today's politics is actually governed by any rules found in high school civics books you are going to be in for a rude awakening in your quest to be an elected official. The constituents that have creditability with the politicians are the ones who show respect and have facts to back up what they have to say.

These people are not royalty...

They deserve the same respect we show each other, no more no less. Too many politicians have different public and private faces.

I quote nmlosp:

After we met with you in your office, you asked "what we wanted"... we told you we would like answers, help for residents that were in need, and help in getting regulation on the Fly Ash.

We gave you a list of residents that needed assistance in relocation.. you stated you would contact them. I went back to Roane County and advised residents that they would be hearing from you... but you gave that list to TVA instead...

and as of today I know of no-one that you have contacted from that list.

Whether his job is part or full time he failed to meet a committment to his constituents....that obligation is
basic and has nothing to do with the rude awakening you alude to.

Amen

"They deserve the same respect we show each other, no more no less. Too many politicians have different public and private faces."

Randmart is 100% correct, they are not royalty. Heck, some of them aren't even competent or honest!

I read One-T to mean that

I read One-T to mean that she was straight up and factual in her conversation with Dennis instead of giving him the old schmooze that most people do when talking to politicians. If an elected official doesn't like talking to people who lay the facts on him they will be kept in the dark by big money and special interest lobbyists.

Regrets

Rep. Ferguson was very nice and gracious when he called. I wish I had asked him what I could do to help him better represent us, then sat back and listened.

I will try to...

I will try to shed some light on this original post. First, I would like to say that Representative Ferguson and I have been friends since the early 90's. It isn't a matter of friendship.
When the citizens testified in front of the Environment and Conservation Committee, Representative Ferguson was there. After the meeting, in his office, he took a list of names of residents who needed help relocating because of medical reasons. Now some may think the medical problems are made up, but I can assure you they are not. I have met with some of these people personally. Mr. Ferguson gave them his word that he would take care of their problems and contact them personally. They never heard a word. He did pass the list on to TVA. But at the hearing, he had heard that TVA had already been contacted. After the testimony, TVA and TDAC officials came just short of calling those who testified liars.
Yesterday, I e-mailed Representative Ferguson's office asking why he had not contacted any of those on the list. I got a call from his office and talked to his assistant. She assured me that he would call me back. I waited all day. Then about 4:40 I received an e-mail telling me that Representative Ferguson had forwarded the list to TVA, but would do so again. It was one of those somewhat prepared statements with a "thank you" for contacting my office.
Every step I took was forwarded to those on that list. I told him in my e-mails that I was going to do that. I also expressed my disappointment in him for not taking the time to contact them personally just to show he was listening. Sometimes that's all they need to keep their hopes up.
It has been over a month and not one of them has had any contact from him or his office.
Again, I have been friends with him for many years. But in this time of need, he let has let them down. That is my opinion anyway.
I am not trying to disrespect Representative Ferguson, or the office he holds. But would it be so difficult to pick up a phone and call them? They now think they have been forgotten by him, TVA, TDAC, and everyone else they have tried to seek help from. And they do need help; more now than before. Again, I know. I have met with them. I have seen their medical difficulties. They see their children getting sick. These are children who were very healthy. The cry because their children cannot even play outside.
Some may think I am exagerating and trying to blow this out of proportion. I would ask them to consider finding out on their own. Sorry this is so long, but I felt it should be explained.

Why is anybody surprised?

Why is anybody surprised? Perhaps he answers some, but that is the exception rather than the rule. And he has been known not to keep his word. I know it for a fact in my dealings with him.
