Dear Roane County Residents,
The all volunteer force of United Mountain Defense is proud to continue to work with your community to help out with the coal ash disaster. We have had numerous successes with your community over the past 3 weeks including raising $13,000 for heavy metal screenings for 23 Swan Pond residents. We are continuing to raise funds for more heavy metal testing. We have helped set up a water distribution center at 816 Swan Pond Circle Drive. We have gathered at least 6 rounds of water testing samples along the Emory River and along the edges of the coal ash disaster site which are in the laboratory and being tested. We helped impacted residents set up 2 community meetings. We have facilitated connections between impacted residents and local folks willing to speak with the media thereby keeping some of the media from over running your town. We have also created our own media and have documented more than 40 hours of events since Dec 22, 2008. We have 24 videos on Youtube now about the disaster. We are trying to raise funds for citizen air quality monitoring and testing for both particulates and volitile organic compounds.******United Mountain Defense volunteers are not making any money for this work.**********
United Mountain Defense volunteers are not just here because of the big media, WE ARE THE MEDIA. United Mountain Defense volunteers have been covering this story and getting your uncensored words out to the world when the corporate media ignored this disaster. United Mountain Defense volunteers are dedicated to helping your community and we need your help.
We have been blessed with the use of two houses over the past 3 weeks but our 2nd house will no longer be available after Jan 17, 2009. If you have a space where we could stay in the area this would help make our work easier because we wouldn't be traveling back and forth from Knoxville each day. We are not picky. We are willing to do work trade such as house maintence or repair. We have great Roane County references. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Matt Landon Full time volunteer staff person for United Mountain Defense

Precicely WHAT corporate (I assume you mean commercial) media ignored this disaster?

Tamara Mariea Is Not A Doctor
As I have commented on dirtycoaltva.blogspot.com, Huffington Post and the NRDC blog, advocates for victims of the Harriman spill need to be very careful about their choice of alliances. Are you aware that Tamara Mariea, who is conducting "heavy metal screenings" at a cost of $13,000, is not a doctor or otherwise licensed as a healthcare provider in Tennessee? Are you aware that she is currently being sued by a client for misrepresentation? See Courthouse News Service and my weblog for more information:

The Swan Pond community is facing a life and death situation. Residents should be encouraged to seek out testing from legitimate medical doctors, not from self-styled, unlicensed "toxicity specialists." They should not risk their health, sabotage their search for justice, or waste their own and their donors' money, by relying on poorly qualified practitioners and nonstandard testing.
Internal Balance Inc.
Tamara Mariea is a Biochemist and Clinical Nutritionist with expertise in Environmental Toxicology and Clinical Detoxification; she does not represent herself as a medical Doctor. Tamara has spent the last 19 years in her career developing her expertise and meeting the needs of families that have been affected by their life environment, dietary choices or chemical toxicities. Her experience with Heavy Metal toxicology in the areas of Autism and Mercury positioning speak for itself. This law suit is brought against Tamara by an out of state client that contacted Internal Balance Inc. for help. Tamara did not solicit this individual. She was referred to Internal Balance Inc. for Detoxification by a friend and a Houston TX doctor whom recommended that she participate in a heavy metal detoxification regime due to her elevated mercury levels. She fully understood the scope of service that Tamara and her team at Internal Balance were offering. They signed a contracted and prepaid for their visit. While at Internal Balance, she was referred to a local dentist as well as a general practice physician additional evaluation, completely in line with Tamara’s ethical commitments to her clients. Her dissatisfaction was due to her family members who do not fully understand nor desire to support her in payment for these services, therefore encouraged her to sue Internal Balance Inc. for far above and beyond what she paid and consumed for services. This is an outrageous and fraudulent claim, attempting to discredit someone that has done nothing but commit herself and her life’s work to helping people find answers to the health riddles that so many people deal with today.
Institution Granting Degree and When?
Having spent since 70s in one or another medical profession, I understand that people, even if they have degrees, can move their emphasis to business and moneymaking enterprises that are not altogether altruistic. MDs are not exempt from this, nor are those with graduate degrees.
But as a minimum starting point, knowing the school granting her degree, when it was granted would be helpful.
Does her business engage in pulling heavy metal toxins from the system by getting them to come out the soles of the feet in a special foot bath?
Working with a licensed physician is no guarantee of anything. Work history and other information about the physician is helpful.
If we are to be skeptical about results from TVS, TDEC, EPA, etc, etc, then we would be well served to be skeptical of those whose businesses are ever so poised to make profits off this situation.
RB
Internal Balance is working with a licensed physician
The clinical screening was performed by a Brentwood, TN corporation called Internal Balance. Internal Balance assembled a skilled team of physician’s assistants who worked under the guidance of a licensed physician, Dr. Daniel Kalv, MD. The owner of Internal Balance, Tamara Mariea is a biochemical nutritionist and a detoxification specialist.
United Mountain Defense has done fundraising to get local residents tested and we have raised enough money to get 29 local residents tested for free at no charge to them. This is not a scam. We are establishing baseline data for the local impacted community.

Thanks for your concern.
Perhaps Some Should Give These Folks...
...A break. The UMD is a bit fanatical but they are performing a very valuable service to our community. What they are doing and their actions are no more fanatical than TVA dumping toxic waste into a 60 foot high 40 acre above ground pond that has been leaking for decades.
Didn't mean to mis-lead you, C-Man
I'm not really taking issue with UMD per se . Based on a number of things I've read, I'm QUESTIONING (as opposed to making an uninformed premature judgment) the likelihood of this group of folks to give UMD valid scientific information/solutions.
UMD, however, I would counsel, for their own protection, to be careful of folks that give them the results they want to believe. Some very successful companies (BUSINESS enterprises, not scientific or medical enterprises) have made good money doing just that, using everything from a mixture of science with pseudoscience to outright charlatanism.

The lab reports that the UMD
The lab reports that the UMD have published are performed by reputable researchers. I trust the reports.
I don't care for some of the hyperbole, but these folks mean well and have worked tirelessly for no pay. They have performed a valuable service to the folks directly affected by the spill.
RB Just Checking...
...To see if your blood is flowing today. I follow you. I actually thought about helping these folks out with some temp housing but then I decided that I probably wasn't ready to see tofu in my pantry. I just like to get your feathers ruffled from time to time just to know I'm still alive. You know like the miller high life commercial where the big black guy takes back the miller high life from the luxury suites. I love that commercial.
C'mon Guys!
Take a close look at the Internal Balance Site and then tell me they are not in the snake oil business.
Here's their pitch for VibroNutrients which can be yours for a paltry $150.00:
Each individual has a unique energetic fingerprint. If present on site, we successfully collect your energetic signature and imprint it along with our proprietary balancing IB Signature Detox Wavelength™ into your VibroNutrients® formula. The raw materials we use hold the power to shift your biochemistry toward the healthy state of balance that you desire (i.e. your Internal Balance). A significant piece to the efficacy of this formulation is that it is customized for the individual to enhance their ability to detoxify as well as resonates energetically with the cellular make-up of that person. Each set of VibroNutrients® is mixed fresh and kept cold during transport allowing for the proper protection and optimal enzyme reactions.
If that doesnt fix you up there's always a good old fashioned coffee enema....decaf I'm sure!
I admire the dedication and sincerity of the UMD people, but question the wisdom of aligning themselves with such an organization.
That's pretty much...
"I admire the dedication and sincerity of the UMD people, but question the wisdom of aligning themselves with such an organization."
... what I was trying to say, Randy. It dilutes the credibility of those in UMD trying to do good to be aligned with pseudoscientific businesses that mix in just enough science to make their profit making schemes seem legit to those who don't investigate.
