Babahatchie Community Band is scheduled to have its annual Music 'N Melons in the Park concert on Sunday, August 24, at 4:00 PM. This celebration of the latter part of summer has been going on for nearly 20 years. They play a cool concert, then everybody has cold watermelon!

The Harriman Lions Club helps with the watermelons, and will sell any not consumed during the concert. This helps benefit their community projects, which are usually centered around vision health.

This concert has no admission charge attached, but donations will be accepted and will be shared between the Babahatchie Band and the Lions Club.

The location will be at the gazebo in the David Webb Riverfront Park in Harriman. There are a few park benches around the gazebo, but folks should plan on bringing lawn chairs or blankets. The benches fill up fast. This is usually the best attended concert of the season at the gazebo.

I was shown a preview of the program for the concert. There will be featured soloists - both vocal and instrumental. The program will be varied. It will include some big band tunes, some jazzy/bluesy tunes. Contemporary film music and a light classical medley from Carmen will also be on the program. It's hard to say what the favorite piece on the concert will be, though my money is on "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" or "What a Wonderful Day." May be "St Louis Blues", though.

Anyway -looks to be a good concert. It's just hard to beat a gazebo on a riverfront with a community band and watermelons all on a summer Sunday afternoon for being PURE All-American! Should be fun! (Weather is promising to cooperate, too!)

Its a great day out and the music is always entertaining. Watermelon good also!
I think my favorite is "Rhapsody in Blue" or any Sousa march music the band plays!
