Babahatchie Band Presents: Summer Ambition Concert

Harriman, TN - Sunday July 6 caps a long Holiday Weekend with the first summer concert of the Babahatchie Community Band. The 4:00 PM concert will be held in the gazebo at the David Webb Riverfront Park. As always with Babahatchie concerts, admission is free.

The concert is called Summer Ambition because of the ambitious nature of the program. As always, the musical styles offered will be varied. The ambition comes into play with the difficulty and complexity of several of the pieces being performed. Many times bands will choose watered down arrangements to play for summertime outdoor concerts, but not this time! Conductor McCall Bohanan has prepared the Babahatchie Band with lots of hard work to perform some real challenges the audience is sure to appreciate.

Composer Earle Hagen has written so many pieces of music that everybody knows at least one, perhaps without knowing that Hagen composed it. Hagen, who died May 26 of this year, wrote TV themes, movie scores, music used for sound tracks, was house arranger for Liberty Records, and much more. Academy award-nominated, he was orchestrator for 20th Century Fox during its golden age. Today the Babahatchie Band performs one of his most well known pieces, a jazz standard, “Harlem Nocturne.” Your memory will be jogged when you hear it.

In a complete switch of gears, the band will also offer three movements from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. In significant contrast, the movements performed will be “Mars – Bringer of War,” “Venus – Bringer of Peace,” and “Jupiter – Bringer of Jollity.” This collection required significant work and accomplishment by the band, which consists of members ranging from high school students to retired folks.

You’ll feel like you’re riding free on the range when you listen to the Babahatchie Band’s rendition of “Mustang!” concert march by Eric Osterling. Elmer Bernstein’s theme from “The Magnificent Seven” will contribute to the Wild West motif aspect of Sunday’s concert. A beautiful and lyrical pop theme from the movie “An American Tail”, “Somewhere Out There” was written by American composer James Horner. Horner has written more famous film scores than can be counted easily, as well as themes for CBS Evening News. Babahatchie trumpeter David Westrich will be featured in this number as well as one other. “Napolitana”, by Peter Tchaikovsky, is a light-hearted trumpet piece you should enjoy.

Big Band music lovers will also enjoy a great medley, “Tribute to Count Basie,” arranged by John Moss. There’s more on the concert, including a Sousa march, a Dixieland Jazz number, and more. So be sure to show up at Riverside Park in Harriman in time for the 4:00PM concert by Babahatchie Community Band this Sunday, July 6. The Babahatchie Band promises to work hard for your summertime enjoyment to cap off a fun holiday weekend.

Note: Sounds like this should be a real neat concert!
