West Roane VFD has a chance to receive a Michigan Power Cleaning ultra high pressure foam fire suppression system from Operation Wildfire, the company's donation program ((link...)). Volunteers have been working on the grant application and have great hopes.

This unit would greatly increase firefighting capabilities, especially on our back roads and in wooded areas where the large tankers and pumpers cannot go. Because the water used is made into very tiny droplets with more surface area, it is said that the unit uses an order of magnitude less water than water-only methods and re-ignitions are reduced.

If West Roane receives the unit, they will convert their 4WD work truck into a brush truck with the foam unit mounted on the back.

Let's all wish West Roane luck and hope they are the winners! Mutual aid agreements mean the whole county and surrounding areas will benefit.

West Roane's grant application in top 5 nationwide but not 1st

WRCVFD was just notified that their 2010 grant application for a Michigan Power Cleaning high pressure foam fire suppression unit (worth $5k to $8k) was unsuccessful. Their application was in the "top 5" nationwide but only one grant was issued this year, to Pembroke, Illinois.

West Roane, indeed the whole county, could really use these foam units. They are very small compared with tanker trucks and when mounted on a 4WD vehicle can access fires and homes on our dirt roads and in our woods.

Better luck next time!
