The dedicated men and women who volunteer at West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department (WRCVFD) have been busy. They went out on 345 runs this past year, an average of almost one per day. About half were emergency medical runs, the rest fires, vehicle extractions, and other emergency calls.

The community--who benefits from their neighbors' volunteering--reaches out to WRCVFD with donations. Here's a graph of non-grant donations and funds raised for the past three years:

Sometimes, it is the volunteers of WRCVFD themselves who give more than half the donated funds.

Personal responsibility?

So very few people give so much. How can we inspire the rest of the community to better support our volunteer fire departments? Or is Roane County continuing to embrace the Bystander Effect for fire and emergency medical services?

It could be

that the "Bystander Effect" practiced in Roane County is what makes this place the backwards-looking-backwater of East Tennessee.
