Do you consider yourself environmentally conscious and responsible?? You might not know that all those colorful explosives used to celebrate special occasions.... (your firecrackers, skyrockets, Roman candles and yes even those so-called "harmless" sparklers)... pose a serious environmental and health danger from heavy metals and other toxic firework fallout. So the next time you are about to set off or buy some cheap fireworks or even attend an outdoor fireworks display, ask yourself....... Is a few minutes of pyrotechnic entertainment really worth needlessly polluting the environment?

Many fireworks are imported from China which is scary because they have a proven track record of cutting corners by using cheaper, more toxic materials. Some of the metals also have radioactive isotopes... hopefully they aren't being used in any fireworks. The American Fireworks Standards Laboratory (AFSL) has established a testing and certification program for Chinese and U.S. fireworks to determine if they are being produced according to AFSL Standards (which meet all U.S. federal requirements). There is a list of prohibited toxic chemicals in the standards but unfortunately participation in the program is voluntary for manufacturers and importers. Firework shipments that pass standards only assure that one random sample from the lot has been tested and met all requirements [2]. Will you trust the quality of your air to China??

For the color effect of fireworks, toxic heavy metals like barium, aluminum, lead, mercury salts, antimony, copper, and strontium can be used in firework compositions. Outdated heavy metals that have been used in the past include rubidium and cadmium. Some toxic elements are supposedly not used in fireworks anymore like lead compounds, chlorates, and mercury as mercurous chloride (calomel), but some firework chemical outlets still sell some of these ingredients, they can still be seen in some pyrotechnic chemical lists, and homemade fireworks makers still sometimes talk about using them.

A case study has shown that within 1 hour of fireworks displays levels of Strontium in the air increased 120 times, Magnesium 22 times, Barium 12 times, Potassium 11 times, and Copper 6 times more than the amount present in the air before the event. Strontium was found to be the best tracer in this study because it measured very high during the event and much lower at other time intervals which indicated that it was mostly a result of the fireworks display. [4]

Another study found that firework events brought air pollution spikes in suspended particles, Nitric oxide (NO), Sulfur dioxide (SO2), and created and dispersed an aerosol cloud hosting a range of metallic elements. The researchers found that although the "recreational pollution" from fireworks is transient in nature, the pollutants are highly concentrated and add significantly to the total yearly metal emissions and the particles are on average small enough to be easily inhaled which poses a health risk to sensitive individuals. [5]

Researchers have found that fireworks can create a burst of ozone which is an extremely reactive greenhouse gas molecule that can attack and irritate the lungs. The ozone is believed to be caused by ultraviolet light released by chemicals in fireworks... which in this study were sparklers. [7]

Accidents: In 2000-2004, fireworks started an estimated 32,300 reported fires per year, including 2,700 building and vehicle fires. More fires are reported on the 4th of July than any other day of the year [1]. Kind of ironic that many local volunteer fire departments often raise needed funds by selling fireworks.

Thank you, Leaf, for

Thank you, Leaf, for bringing this touchy subject out in the open, especially just before the 4th of July festivities. Fireworks are indeed, very polluting. In Montreal, where smog alert days are increasing every year, we still insist on holding (in the summertime) the almost weekly Montreal International Pyromusical Competition, also known as the Montreal International Fireworks Competition (see link below). We hear a lot about global warming and pollution, but to what point are we all ready to rethink the "business as usual" and the "let's party tonight, and worry later about tomorrow" mentalities?

Kind of makes you think

about Rome burning while Nero fiddles on, doesn't it?
Fireworks is probably the most social sacred cow in our culture. But then as a farmer, I am use to stepping in and around piles of manure.

Not just "kind of ironic"

Farmer Leaf,

A fire department selling fireworks IS ironic.

Fireworks are dangerous and, as you pointed out, polluting.

Responsible fire departments, including our own, recommend not buying your own fireworks but instead attending a public display if you must experience fireworks. If you must get your own fireworks--and there are those who feel they must--some opine that it is better to get them from firefighters and in the process subsidize more conventional fire department activities such as fighting fires, responding to medical emergencies, and promoting safety.

The use of fireworks of any kind is not recommended. Fireworks produce air pollution and cause fires and injuries. There is no such thing as a safe firework. The fireworks safety brochure handed out the past 3 years by West Roane VFD at their fireworks tent in the Wal-Mart lot is my work.

I recommend a virtual fireworks show; quite a few show up with a search at Google: (link...)

If that won't do, please consider attending a public display rather than doing your own.

Here is a more local slant!

TVA donates $10,000 for local fireworks festivities. A smart move on their part and here is why.

Sometime in the future in a courtroom.

TVA lawyer: So (to Swan Pond Resident (SWR)) You claim that you are suffering from heavy metal poisoning as a result of the Kingston ash spill?

SWR - Yes sir.

TVA lawyer: Tell me in approximate numbers, how many times have you attended a public fireworks display?

SWR - Well, every year since I was a little child. Sometimes twice a year.

TVA lawyer - And how old are you now?

SPR- I am 45 years old.

TVA lawyer - So would it be reasonable to conclude that you have attended at least 40 fireworks events and possibly as many as 80 events?

SWR lawyer - Objection your honor, what does this line of questioning have to do with heavy metal poisoning?

TVA lawyer - Your honor, I am prepared to show the court that there are many varied sources of heavy metal poisoning here in the this community, and that to try and pinpoint it to one specific source is both inaccurate and unscientific.

Judge - Objection over ruled, you may proceed........

So folks, TVA may very well have bestowed another Trojan Horse on the Kingston Community! DO look a gift horse in the mouth, it may have hidden teeth you didn't even think about.

You must have left the room

when they were discussing lawsuit strategy 101. Ever been to a TVA or corporate liability trial? I once testified at a water pollution trial and the defense lawyers used my "sterling reputation for integrity" as a basis to turn a paper I had written around to prove, "there are many causes of river bank collapse besides the actions of our client."

I didn't claim TVA evil for their fireworks trick, just shrewd. And it seems that they sucked you in didn't they?

If I read your other post on this thread correctly, you don't want inconvenient facts to bump up against your cultural icons. Sort of a "I could stop eating sugar if it wasn't so sweet."

When the boat is sinking

some people complain about getting their shoes wet. Others blame the Coast Guard for not being there at that instant. And some put skill and experience to work to either save the boat, or if that is not possible, then to save the crew and passengers. What category do you fit into?

As to your assertion that some hack lawyer had me for lunch: Not only did you not go to law school, you were not at the trial where Opryland hired the biggest and best law firm in Nashville to represent them, so you have little idea what actually went on. They were definitely not "hack lawyers."

When I post on here, I attempt to offer practical and tested ideas that could, if one were so inclined, be helpful in meeting some current environmental, health and political challenges. What readers do with that information is really none of my business. If you want to live your life in a manner that suits your inability to accept changing realities, then I have no intention of standing in your way.

In conclusion, your mental acuity may not be as sharp as your own self-analysis would indicate. As Eldridge Cleaver so eloquently put it, you are either part of the solution, or part of the problem. By your own admission, you have chosen to be part of the problem. I wish you the best.

Thanks for the excellent insight. Trojan horse indeed.

When it comes to this community

TVA will use any tactic to get the edge. I am neither agreeing or disagreeing with the reasons posted on here for them donating to the fireworks. I am certain for one of the reasons though. They get an "atta boy" from the press.

And, I do know they will try anything possible to show us that they are all powerful, and all we need to do is sit back, shut up, and take what they dish out. If we do what they want, then we deserve what we get in the future. And on the horizon is a landfill in Midtown that will be structured to hold 750 million cubic yards of new coal ash. And TVA will spend a lot more than $10,000 trying to accomplish this.

How many seen the flag

How many seen the flag insert in the Roane County news with the TVA on the back of it?

I loved the "Committed to Roane County"

Committed so much the County is the last to know when any thing happens at the TVA. Don't believe be ask Farmer and all the Mayors. They find out most if not all TVA operational information when the general public does.

I saw it Randy and it was

I saw it Randy and it was the first year I didn't hang it up in my window. I refused to display it and have the TVA side staring me in the face all week. I put up three fabric flags outside instead.
