Whites Creek Forest Fire UpdateSubmitted by WhitesCreek on July 7, 2012 - 7:43am.
The fire never got closer than 200 yards from the house. After being ringed and burned out and rained on and watched for two days, the fire mysteriously flared up on Walden Ridge outside the contained area. Imagine that. State foresters worked on transporting water to the new area on Friday. It kept them from getting a much needed day off. In addition to the fire damage itself, fighting the fire leaves its own scars. I need some heavy equipment to recover some of the areas they "recovered" with their heavy equipment. One of the big problems with fire breaks is he criminal trespass and disrespectful use of the breaks as new ATV trails, being absolutely illegal doesn't seem to stop them. I found out more about the bear tracks, including a more precise location and the fact that there were two sets of tracks, big ones and little ones. How cool is that?

If such a fire happened here, we would be devastated. (Our lungs were already devastated just by the wood smoke blowing our way!) Is there anything we can do to help you get through this?

You are doing it. You support our local volunteer fire fighters who were first on the scene as usual.
I live on Buck Creek in east Roane county and 22 days ago I was swimming and noticed something in my peripheral vision. It was a huge bear, 30 feet from me. He was staring at me. He let me walk backwards to my golf cart. I drove in reverse all that way to my house, as he watched. I was scared for 24 hours. The next day, he was spotted on the Pickel Farm by TWRA, who noted it was a 600 lb. mature bear. I don't swim in the middle of the night any more, because the TWRA agent told me they are nocturnal. It's the only downside of having tens of thousands of wild blackberries on my property. I'm not afraid of him any more; I sort of miss him.
The moral of all these stories is that they live among us. Relax!
