This is bad news for our schools. :(

Here's a quote: "Last week, the RIAA celebrated the signing of a ridiculous new law in Tennessee that says:
'Each public and private institution of higher education in the state that has student residential computer networks shall: ... [R]easonably
attempt to prevent the infringement of copyrighted works over the institution's computer and network resources, if such institution receives fifty (50) or more legally valid notices of infringement as prescribed by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 within the preceding year.' ... [T]he RIAA succeeded in Tennessee (and is pushing in other states) with this provision that gives Big Content the ability to hold universities hostage through the use of infringement notices. Moreover, the new rules will cost Tennessee a pretty penny in the cost review attached to the Tennessee bill, the state's Fiscal Review Committee estimates that the new obligations will initially cost the state a whopping $9.5 million for software, hardware, and personnel, with recurring annual costs of more than $1.5 million for personnel and maintenance."

This is bigger than folks realize

I propose a surtax on CD's

I propose a surtax on CD's to pay for this. Why not?

A better idea

The law should be repealed. Why should schools and taxpayers be forced to help the RIAA thugs persecute folks?

I have at times made royalties myself and greatly respect intellectual property rights. However, the organized-crime-like RIAA actions and attitudes have made me cut back sharply on music purchases and use.

After all, one does not have to have the music of others as one must have air and food. I have plenty of music already stored in my mind to last 'til the end of my days. And I can always make my own when the mood strikes. I'm not going back to my previous levels of music consumption until all this DRM nonsense is long past.

I wonder how many others there are out there like me who don't steal or share music but also don't buy it anymore because of distaste for the RIAA.

Never did buy a lot...

... but sure makes me be deliberate about what I do buy. This is an asinine law. I'm lazy and haven't looked it up - what collection of dingalings in our legislature sponsored and ramrodded this?
