If you are traveling in East Tennessee any time I really suggest you check this place out. These kitties were about the size of Siberian Tigers and roamed our yards until about 10,000 years ago.

I question the conclusion somewhat. Prey reliability could support the adult population and yet not support the young. The extripation did coincide with the disappearance of most of the large native mammals, most likely as a result of the appearance of humans. We don't seem to plan ahead as a species until we run into the wall of starvation. And we've been doing this for a very long time.
Just noticed it's closed until Jan 2, 2013. I was thinking about swinging by there on a trip to Asheville.
