145 Years Ago Today John Muir Crossed the Emory and Clinch Rivers and Walked Into Kingston

John Muir is the Father of our National Parks. We have one of the greatest here in Tennessee. We should have had two. A study published in 1938 by TVA called for a mirror park for the Great Smoky Mountains to consist of roughly 78% of the Cumberland Plateau. We missed an opportunity that comes once in the lifetime of the whole human race...Even if it would mean that I couldn't live where I do, since Whites Creek Gorge is specifically mentioned in the book as a special area. Could still happen.

I'm still agitating for the John Muir festival in Roane County. One day, maybe...

And now our majestic Hemlocks are dying

The hemlock, judging from the common species of Canada, I regarded as the least noble of the conifers. But those of the eastern valleys of the Cumberland Mountains are as perfect in form and regal in port as the pines themselves.
