TBI Now Involved in 31st District Crossover Vote ChallengesSubmitted by WhitesCreek on July 26, 2012 - 6:57am.
In TN voters don't register as D's and R's. Yet Rhea county officials refused to allow voters with Democratic voting histories to vote in the Republican primary even though there is no Democratic candidate for State Rep and the election will be decided in the Republican primary. The Rhea county election commissioner both made the challenges to stop people from voting and sat on the three person panel the challenge was appealed to. If that is not specifically illegal it certainly doesn't pass the smell test.

in order to be eligible to vote in Rhea County? A citizen is either eligible to vote or she isn't. Certainly having a county administrator being part of a panel of arbiters which is able to arbitrarily deny someone the right to vote should warrant an investigation. And since the language in the law contradicts itself, that's more than enough reason for the proper authorities to clarify this confusingly bizarre voting procedure before the November election.
Kinda makes me glad that I'm unencumbered in my thought process by not being a lawyer.
The same thing happened in Cumberland County in either the 2008 or 2010 primary. I can't recall which side tried to stop the woman from voting, but it was a big issue.
As the law stands now, if you are registered to vote you can vote in either primary. Now I hear there is a move by GOP to change it, of course it won't happen this cycle. This comes up periodically from one side or the other.
I am independent, and have no problem voting for a Republican or Democrat, as long as I feel they are the best person. So if they change the law we independents are left out.
