5 Cooling Stations to be Open in Roane County

Submitted by WhitesCreek on June 28, 2012 - 4:05pm.

The folks at OES...

Office of Emergency Services & Homeland Security for Roane County worked this morning getting this organized and made it happen.

Thanks to them AND the locations opening as Heat Relief Stations!

It sounds good on paper,

But it doesn't seem that practical or useful when one examines the details.
The closing time is 6 p.m., still extremely hot, and a home or trailer that has been baking in the sun all day doesn't cool off until about sunrise the next day.
Also these "cooling stations" are not intended for anything more than very short-term, temporary relief for people who are able to drive somewhere. This is of no help to the elderly or financially challenged who may lack AC, mobility, and a means of transportation.

My recommendation for "cooling stations" would be the frozen food section at Krogers or Wal-Mart. Open the glass door and feel the relief.

They couldn't do it perfectly...

... so they shouldn't do it at all?

It sounds good on more than paper if one needs that respite due to their location during those hours and it is available - at least far better than if it were not available. I have noted that Roane County - at least from what I see in the news - is the only county around to have provided even this level of assistance.

I maintain my thanks and admiration for what they have done.

Is that what I said?

How about if you are going to do something, don't do it half-assed. There is a reason Roane County is the only one setting up "cooling stations" in East Tenn. They are tokenism at best. What is needed is cool shelters, open 24 hours, in local schools, staffed by professional health people, with a place to lie down, hydrate, shower.

Noon 'til 6 "Cooling Stations" are a a half-baked idea thought up by sedentary, overweight guys sitting in an air conditioned office. It allows the people "in charge" to feel good in the mistaken belief that they are actually helping meet the crisis, while they sit back and congratulate each other about how brilliant an idea they had.

The ministers need to get off their lofty pulpits and go out and gather up the hot and wretched and take them to their air conditioned churches, instead of waiting for people to "stop in." WWJD

My advise to you RB, get out of the house at 6:10 pm today and take a walk around the block. If you make it home without assistance, I'll listen more closely to your POV.

BTW - Heat makes me cranky-you?

So you're starving and

So you're starving and someone offers you half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and you refuse because it's only half a sandwich?

RB, gives a lot of his time in volunteer service to others, Leaf. You don't have to tell us heat makes you cranky. Let's hope your condition sees improvement soon.

Thank you for sticking up for the volunteers. :) These cooling stations are staffed by volunteers on shoestring budgets. Those who complain that more should be done might think about donating and volunteering themselves. Every shoulder to the wheel helps.

This has nothing to do with

with volunteer workers. This has to do with inadequate policy from the top.

Could you get yourself to a cooling station if your power went out or your AC gave up the ghost. Do you know how close the Southeast is to brownouts right now?

We are facing a crises that will not be solved by burning more coal at a faster rate in order to pretend we are not in serious climate trouble.

And the church cooling stations are hardly operating on shoestring budgets!

That's a pretty inept metaphor

We're not offering half a sandwich to starving people. We're closing cooling stations in the hottest part of the evening.

There are usually two

There are usually two distinct groups in this world when it comes to trying to do something beneficial. Group A does what they can with what they have to work with. Group B bitches about the way group A did it.

Leaf I don't know you other than reading your posts here. I had always thought you would be a member of group A but after reading your posts on this subject, I now have my doubts.

Hey CC,

At least we are talking about something other than Ms. Hurley's antics on this post! We're actually having a debate on a MEANINGFUL subject.

A temporary measure only

This might be temporarily useful for a few people (cooling stations), but it doesn't address the main issue of climate change, about which nothing meaningful is being done on a county, state, federal or international level.
Idiots on the right have rejected climate science and claim it's all a liberal hoax to hurt the economy. Now there's some deep thinking for you. Sounds like they already are suffering from heat stroke.

If TVA has a challenge to keep enough power flowing to bear the load of maxed out AC demand, then we may find a few of our obese fellow citizens sizzling as they fry in their mobile homes (defacto large scale solar ovens) during brownouts or worse.

This isn't a fluke, this is the new weather pattern-extreme heat & droughts.

Let's just keep on digging

Let's just keep on digging that sequestered carbon out of the ground and burning it to run the air conditioners and hope everything turns out OK. Sometimes I think we are a stupid and suicidal species, hellbent on eradicating ourselves from this planet.

Having said that, I still appreciate the work some folks do to help other folks. If we could only harness that good attitude and act for the future we could save ourselves.

West Roane County VFD on Pumphouse Rd.

West Roane County has a cooling station, too, at West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 on Pumphouse Road just outside Rockwood.

I count on West Roane to go

I count on West Roane to go above and beyond the call of duty. These are good people.

Also Add This one:

Lee Village Baptist Curch in east Harriman.

There may be more as time progresses.

Are box fans being given out

Are box fans being given out this year as they have in some years past when it was so hot?
