Local 5th-Graders Want to Learn MusicSubmitted by onetahiti on February 8, 2012 - 12:06pm.
Fifth-graders in Harriman, Tennessee, are hoping to learn to play the soprano recorder this spring. They are looking forward to giving a concert! However, as yet they have no instruments. Their teacher has asked for help (Link...) on DonorsChoose.org. All donations are tax-deductible, but hurry--their request times out in 7 days. Please consider helping these students learn to read music and learn the joys of performing! -- OneTahiti

In addition to being fun, playing recorder teaches skills that translate well to other instruments. The fingering is very similar to that of other woodwinds such as flutes, clarinets, and saxophones. The right-hand fingering is very similar to that of brass instruments such as trumpets, french horns, and tubas. The breath control needed for playing recorders is important for both woodwinds and brass.
And learning to read music opens so many doors.
Sixty students are dreaming of playing these very inexpensive yet serviceable and sturdy plastic instruments--they are not asking for the rosewood ones!--in an upcoming concert. Please help them with their dream.

Five bucks buys a recorder for a kid, folks. You don't need to be a big hitter to play.
The students' recorder project at DonorsChoose.org completed! Doonesbury (Gary Trudeau) of comic book fame stepped in with matching funds.
He will match your gift, too! Just choose a classroom, then on the payment page enter ZONKER in the giftcard/match code field.
Here are other Roane County classrooms who have asked for help: Link... (corrected)
Here is the Doonesbury cartoon where the matching funds were announced: Link...
You can re-use the ZONKER match code, at least for now. :)
