Bald Eagles Shot in Cumberland and Bledsoe Counties

Submitted by Rockwood Lawyer on March 8, 2011 - 3:16pm.

KNS has the story on bald eagles being shot, including one in Crab Orchard, Cumberland County. This is senseless and ridiculous. Why would you shoot a bald eagle?

Whoever did this is dumb enough to be proud of it, and will probably be talking. If you hear anything, call TWRA; there is a major reward.

I have a bad feeling about

I have a bad feeling about this. The Crab Orchard bird was found only six miles from the Whites Creek nest site. This is well within the 15 square mile feeding range for bald eagles. The nest blew down during a storm in December and we expected the birds to have been rebuilding but we haven't spotted them yet. I hope this isn't one of our pair. There are several immatures hanging around. We'll be alert to spotting the adult birds until we see if we still have our pair.

There seems to be a rash of anti-environmentalism driving some of this. Four Whooping cranes have been shot this year and now two eagles, and that's just the ones we have located. How many more have dropped in areas where they won't be found?
