Why Isn't Roane County Competing for Arrowmont?Submitted by onetahiti on July 1, 2010 - 1:54pm.
The venerable Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is looking for a new, non-urban home (Link...). If the school relocated to Roane County, it would be a revitalizing jewel that would greatly uplift our economy, tourism, and culture. Why are Roane County, the Roane Alliance, and our towns not even trying to attract this valuable plum? Not once in months of news about this has Roane County been mentioned as even interested. -- OneTahiti

I don't know the answer to it.
I also must say I didn't have much awareness of this, and I'm generally alert for such opportunities with regard to the humanities. I could have been asleep at the wheel, or there may not have been much public noise about it - don't know which.
BUT - I will say that given some of the outbursts that have been experienced on this forum and that public officials MUST have been subjected to with regard to such projects (that involve some risk and some significant investment) from the "nattering nabobs of negativity" that abound in Roane County, I can at least understand some degree of reluctance to proceed aggressively while such projects as the Princess Theatre are not yet finished. NOT, mind you, that I agree with such negativity. But its influence can't be denied, sad to say.
This kind of project always involves risk and significant investment. There are those who believe if a certain level of return on investment can't be guaranteed ab initio then a project shouldn't begin. And those folks tend to be quite vocal. And this is an election year.
For the county (as in government) to be "interested" that would mean somebody would get to raise objections about county money (read that taxpayer money) being used in risky investment... and thus the circus would begin.
Again - I'm not "agin" it at all. I'd probably be "fer" it... I'm just ruminating on some possibilities as to why it's not in the foreground right now.
Thanks for the info and the stimulus! Always like it when you contribute here!

Thanks for the kind words and thoughtful reply. :)
I first brought the Arrowmont opportunity up as an aside back on Pi Day (Link...).
With Arrowmont already long-established, the risk wouldn't be nearly as great as that from the attraction of a new, unproven concern.
Of course I always enjoy your posts! :) Keep up the good work. :)

... to sleeping at the switch. That'll teach me to whiz by one of your posts too quick! And I LIKE your point about Arrowmont being well established. Very germane.

Arrowmont has been around for decades. See their Wikipedia entry: Link...
Arrowmont is a Big Deal. :)

... has been around a long time... I meant I was asleep at the switch with regard to this new opportunity and knowing about their relocation desires.
Thanks mucho!
