The man was arrested in Athens this afternoon.
I knew Cassandra, and she was a very nice woman and mother. This event is obviously going to be devastating for her family and children. Much of her family is from out of town, and I understand that they are still working on funeral arrangements.
Maybe some good can come of this event for someone else, however, if we all take this opportunity to reflect on how destructive domestic violence can be, and to realize that there are resources to help those who are being abused.
A victim of domestic violence can obtain an Order of Protection at the Roane County General Sessions Court Clerk's office on the second floor of the Roane County Courthouse. The Order of Protection is a formal order that will be served on the person that is accused of the abuse and will prohibit that person from contacting or coming around the victim who requested the order. You can call 376-5584 for more information about that process.
Just as important, there are support resources that can help domestic violence victims with all of the practical issues that abuse can create. Sometimes, the assistance can simply be in the form of a person to talk to about the process of escaping the abuse and ensuring that the law is enforced. In other cases, a person is available to go to court with the victim seeking help. There are also resources to ensure that victims have the financial ability to live independently.
Child and Family Tennessee is one of the nonprofit organizations that helps victims of domestic abuse. Their 24-hour domestic violence hotline is (865) 637-8000. For Roane County cases, Child and Family Tennessee’s Domestic Violence Advocate is Karen Lambeth, who may be reached at (865) 256-2451.
If you know someone who may need help with domestic violence, let them know that help is available.
Cassandra's funeral will be held Monday, February 15 at 8:00 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home, which has posted an obituary here.

I am so sorry to hear of her death, most everyone knows about orders of protection. But unfortunately, they can't stop someone from killing you. Also, you can't help someone who won't help themselves!
