Vol Fire Department - Property Taxes - Question

Submitted by Georgia Girl on December 19, 2009 - 9:14am.

An article in the Roane Co News - Opinion section (Dec. 18th) indicates that Volunteer Firefighters are excempt from paying county property tax, since they are not paid. Is this true for Roane County Volunteer Firefighters? The person writing the article may have been referencing his previous town in Virginia. I would like to see Roane Co. have this benefit if they do not already have it.

IANAA (I am not an attorney), but to the best of my knowledge, volunteer firefighters still must pay taxes like everyone else. The volunteer fire departments themselves, being IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofits and also specially treated in Tennessee law, pay less tax than a comparable for-profit commercial business would. Individual volunteers, however, are still subject to taxes.

A list of the current known advantages given to volunteer firefighters in Tennessee is available at:

This and other related links, including information from the Tennessee Bar Association on Volunteer Firefighter Paid Leave, may be found on the WestRoane.com web site in the "See Also:" paragraph at the bottom of the page of their Opportunities section.

I wish there were more financial benefits for volunteer emergency personnel. We might get more volunteers. WRCVFD has a very strong need right now for both more volunteers and more support from the community.
