The AP Story:

Kingston's mayor, Troy Beets, who is also a member of the county commission for the 52,000 residents of Roane County where the spill happened, said TVA is not only footing the cost of the cleanup but also has paid out $43 million to local governments for use on projects that will improve community life but aren't related to the environmental disaster.

The mayor said that despite the negative headlines and publicity he sees the community "being better off because of this."

"As leaders we need to rebuild our county, not portray it in a negative light," he said.

And this

TVA environmental executive Anda Ray said the utility is "treating the material right now as hazardous waste."

I would love to know why she says something like that. Maybe she doesn't know the definition of hazardous waste. If they were treating it that way, the workers involved in drying and loading the ash on the trains would be in hazmet coveralls and would be wearing respirators.

Oh, and isn't it odd that Mayor Beets had no idea what the EE/CA or the CIP was? He had to recuse himself from a LTRC statement because he had not seen or heard of the documents.

And the 43 million....well, let's just say two words, "pet projects". None of it went to the Swan Pond community for any type of development, or to any of the residents still stuck out there.

"We can't go to Pappaw's

"We can't go to Pappaw's because of the volcano." Now, that says it all, doesn't it...

Ok... I'm...

I'm "better-off"?

Gee whiz Mr. Mayor Beets... thanks for letting me know. Was it because of that nice shiney $43 Million from TVA? Because the people of Swan Pond are still suffering... they didn't get out.... nor did they benefit from the cash.....

But last New Year's Eve...we were uprooted (medical advise to leave the area), spent 19 days in a hotel... was moved into a rental (yes it was nice).... but then the TVA "lease" expired and we were left on our own to fight the giant... and Mr. Mayor Beets... we can't go home to Swan Pond....

Gee, and we are better off? Tell that to the little brown-eyed boy that can't grow up in Swan Pond.... uprooted from friends.... hopes and dreams that are only a memory now....

Well Mayor Beets... you may be "better-off", but I don't think we are.....
