KINGSTON, Tenn. — The ash spill at a TVA coal-burning plant that bolstered clean energy advocates' arguments against coal has — almost a year later — lost much of the haphazard look of a calamity.

"We're learning as we go," said Mike Scott, TVA's Kingston operations manager.
The ash is mainly silica, he said, and while it does have some hazardous materials in it, the ash itself is not hazardous. Air and water monitoring have indicated no threat to health or the environment, he said.

Wow, if we could just separate that harmless silica from that hazardous stuff everything would be just fine, just a little mud. Profound.
