Any Word on this house fire near Teague Road and Eureka? Doesn't sound good from this report...

Reportedly no one was hurt. I hope this was the case.

It was a hot fire...

The report linked to had a minor error in that it was not a two-alarm fire. There was one alarm. Two departments responded automatically based on mutual aid agreements (West and Midtown). They need the extra tankers. Those who were there told me of no injuries.

The water issue had to do with - as is often the case in the county - locations of sources of water. They had to keep tankers going back and forth shuttling water, hooking up to the engines so they could pump the water onto the fire, change out tankers, etc. They did utilize a siamese connector so a second tanker could hook up while one was disconnecting, etc, so they could minimize or eliminate time without water to the engines. Didn't always work, but it's as good as they could do. They rolled out q lot of supply line, but it still wasn't enough to eliminate the need for shuttling tankers.

Some hot spots rekindled Sunday, and Rockwood city FD went out to handle that, according to a Rockwood firefighter I talked to. Don't know why West did not go to that rekindle.

We are indeed starting in to the time of year when folks need to take especial care about fire safety, ventilation for heat, etc.

Sources of Fire Safety Information

RoaneBooster was spot on when he said, "We are indeed starting in to the time of year when folks need to take especial care about fire safety, ventilation for heat, etc."

Even those of us who feel we know fire safety tips and best practices can benefit from a seasonal refresher.

An excellent source of information is the WestRoane.com web site of the West Roane County Volunteer Fire Department (WRCVFD), which has about 6.5 gigabytes of information gathered for you plus links to many other sites. Their fully searchable web site brings together information from many authoritative sources. Here are some sample searches: home heating, kitchen or cooking fires, smoking and home fires.

Here are a few top fire safety picks from the WRCVFD site:

Smoking and Home Fires:

We should all keep in mind that "Smoking is the number one cause of home fire deaths in the United States" and that "If You Smoke, Smoke Outside" (Link...). And don't forget:

"If you smoke, put it out.
All the way. Every time."

Two other important major types of winter home fires are home heating and cooking fires.

Home Heating:

Home heating is a leading cause of residential fire in the United States. See Winter Fires: Safety Tips for the Home (Link...).

Kitchen Safety:

Read "How to Put Out a Kitchen Oil Fire," making sure to watch the very scary and instructive video (transcript provided for the visually impaired): Link...

In Southern rural homes, the kitchen is the #1 starting point of fires (Link...).

In the interest of full disclosure: It is rumored that yours truly may have had something to do with the site so take that into account when you read the glowing recommendation. :)

I strongly SUSPECT that...

the quote below is WHY WRCVFD has such a useful website!

It is indeed excellent, as is WRCVFD.
