Charlie Mead: In Memoriam

Submitted by onetahiti on June 22, 2009 - 12:27pm.

My dear friend and colleague Charlie Mead passed away this morning. Even though I knew it was coming, I am still stunned.

What can I say about Charlie? He deserves poems and statues.

Writing a poem worthy of Charlie will be tough, certainly beyond my capabilities. In the meantime...

He was amazing and wonderful, larger than life, a true original. Charlie's heart and personality were huge, bigger than Roane County, bigger than the world. He was more real than real.

He was brilliant and talented, a thinker and genius, a dreamer and doer, Roane County’s own Leonardo da Vinci: a scientist, an inventor, an artist in both photography and wood.

He loved learning and research and trying new things. He was always curious about life’s mysteries from Photoshop to genetics and more. His passionate love of learning and pursuit of excellence were infectious.

He glowed with life and joy and love of people.

He was a friend to all and a good friend to me. He always was ready to extend a helping hand.

He was a leader and volunteer. He was chairman of the board of the West Roane fire department as well as its photographer. He recruited many volunteers, including me. He also helped the Foothills Craft Guild and served on its board of directors.

He was a husband, father, and grandfather, the successful patriarch of a large clan.

He seemed to know everyone and everyone knew him. I’ve lived here two decades, but most of the people I know here I know through Charlie. Many a stranger’s door was opened warmly when I said, “Charlie said I should call.”

He was the nerve center of our community, a common thread holding us together, always working for good. People called him “Mayor of West Roane County.”

OneThaiti has said it all

OneThaiti has said it all very adroitly about Charlie Meade and I agree 100%. I first met Charlie when I began work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Biology Division in the 1960s. One of the first people I met was this big bear of a man with a personality as big as all outdoors. This person was Charlie Meade. He always had a smile and brought joy to people. He would come to our lab every morning carrying a cup of coffee and chatted with us for about 30 minutes and kept us all in stitches while he was there. I always looked forward to these times together. It was a great way to start the day. Charlie was a brilliant biochemist and was always ready to help any and everyone. He never saw a stranger. My field was genetics and I never had the pleasure of meeting all of Charlie's children but I know his son Willard and he carries so much of his Daddy's genome. He is a gifted, gentle giant of a fellow just like his Dad; so even thought Charlie has left us, he gave us one just like him. God Bless the memory of Charlie Meade and his family. His passing through this world made a big difference to so many people.

Charlie Mead's Obituary

He wrote his own obituary. A somewhat garbled version appeared in the Roane County News. His original draft version appears at Evans Mortuary (Link...) and the Knoxville News Sentinel (Link...) and with a few typos fixed at WestRoane.com (Link...) and in the Oak Ridger (Link...).

Adventures

That's neat! I was very sad that the whole fiasco happened with the officers on the interstate a couple years back as he was such a nice and dear man as anyone could see, but maybe he caulked that up to one of his adventures.
